Only one trijet exists in any significant numbers in the world today; unfortunately, its days are numbered. The fact that you can visit an airport with a significant cargo operation in 2024 and still see a three-engine widebody airplane is reason enough to put it on a shirt. So here it is: The MD-11 is a longer, updated version of the DC-10 that was supposed to have improved performance but never quite lived up to the hype. It started flying passengers in the 1990s; by the late 2000s it was relegated to flying freight.
Much of the remaining MD-11 fleet is expected to be retired by 2025; us trijet fans can only hope some will find new life, before one of commercial aviation’s most recognizable designs fades into history and the desert boneyards.
