When the A340 entered service in 1993, it brought a new four-engine jet design to intercontinental travel and became a mainstay of international airlines’ long-haul fleets. The A340 offered better operating economics than older 747 models, and later A340 variants operated the longest flights on the planet. Perhaps the jet's most endearing feature, though, are the engines of the A340-300; their size and nacelle shape has given this airplane the nickname “hairdryer jet."
